This guy does a good job of going over the basics. Here's his points in a nutshell:
1. GET a computer!!!"A fast computer" with fire wire and USB"
2. GET a sound card/interface
3.GET recording software ex. "Pro Tools", "Sonar"
4.GET Speakers/monitors
5.GET a main work station EX. Midi controller or Synthesizer
6.GET a pair of really GOOD Headphone
7.GET a condenser mic
